By Ken L. Birks
We come into
this world naked and innocent as babes
We see and perceive all
that is around us with great wonder.
Perceptions of reality formed by others
bring assumptions with confusion.
Caught in a web of meaningless
existence, we cry out in desperation.
Lost in confusion we grope about in
blindness hoping for a ray of light.
For the blindness that grips the soul,
there’s hope in the dark of the night.
In the midst of all that clutters, a
still small voice speaks with
Where did it come from?
What was it that spoke with such
Oh that it could be
captured – that brief moment with such
It spoke with such warmth and
love in the midst of turmoil and unease.
The voice in the wind will surely come
again as we wait with expectation.
must be seized when the wind blows with
such sweetness before cessation.
Coming as a beam of light, the voice
points to a new path to explore.
becomes stronger giving direction to the
path forward, so near.
riveted, the light rests on something
blocking the pathway ahead.
now focused, a cross stands in the way
that must be followed.
speaks with such clarity, explaining the
meaning of the cross.
We realize, we
must now embrace it fully before making
of the sweetness that comes from obeying
the voice, we trust.
The peace coming
from obedience floods our souls as other
voices are hushed.
How do we embrace
something that represents pain,
humiliation and suffering?
embrace it and carry it everywhere we
go, His voice, we must now trust.
With confidence and assurance, unafraid
of what's ahead, forward we thrust.
To our surprise, all burdens and the
cares that weighed us down are lifted.
Our sins, added to the weight, we
realize, the One it represents has now
Weightless, it now seems,
though the weight of our sin and shame
He who gives voice walks
alongside, bearing the brunt of the
He continues to
whisper to us, “Follow Me and cast all
of your cares upon Me.”
lost in confusion, we willingly embrace
His cross daily, so freely.
this voice leads to daily adventures of
faith and love, we breathe deeply.
The peace and joy that floods our souls
is worth the cost of becoming His
Committing to Him daily, our
thoughts are His as He leads so
His plans and purposes
are now ours as our thoughts plan our
ways to blend.
No longer lost in a
web of meaningless existence, there is
no need to pretend.
Giving praise and
thanksgiving, we breathe in deeply, His
presence, so sweetly.
