By Ken L. Birks
We come into this world naked and
innocent as babes.
We see and perceive all that is around
us with great wonder.
Perceptions of reality formed by those
around us bring acumen with confusion.
Lost in confusion we grope about in
blindness hoping for a ray of light.
Caught in a web of meaningless
existence, we cry out in desperation.
Is there hope for blindness that grips
the soul in hopelessness in the dark of
A still small voice whispers in the
midst of all the sounds that clutter.
What is this voice? Where did it come
from? What was it that I heard?
Oh that I could capture it once again –
that brief moment with such peace!
I will await to listen and seize it when
the wind blows with such sweetness,
The voice in the wind will surely speak
again as I wait with anticipation.
Here it is, coming with a beam of light
pointing me to a new path to pursue
As I follow, the voice becomes stronger
giving direction to the path forward
The light focuses on something blocking
the path ahead. What is it?
With eyes focused, a cross stands in the
way I must follow, so true
The voice speaks with such clarity
explaining the meaning of the cross.
With realization and understanding, I
now embrace it before moving onward.
Having tasted of the sweetness that
comes from obeying the voice, I trust.
The peace that comes from obedience now
floods my soul as other voices are
How can I not embrace something that I
know represents pain, humiliation and
In His voice I now trust as I embrace
this cross and carry it everywhere I go.
With confidence and assurance, unafraid
of what's ahead, forward I thrust.
To my surprise, all burdens and the
cares that weighed me down are lifted.
to the weight of the cross, the One it
represents has taken them.
The cross seems weightless, though the
weight of my sin and shame are now
He whom it represents walks beside me
bearing the brunt of the weight, now
He continues to whisper in my ear,
“Follow Me and cast all of your cares
No longer lost in confusion, I willingly
embrace His cross daily, so freely.
Knowing this voice within leads me to
daily adventures of faith and love, I
The peace and joy that floods my soul is
worth the cost of becoming His friend.
As I commit to Him daily, my thoughts
are His thoughts as He leads me so
His plans and purposes are now mine as
my thoughts plan my ways to blend.
No longer lost in a web of meaningless
existence, there is no need to pretend.
I give Him praise and thanksgiving as I
deeply breathe in His presence, so
This poem describes how God's voice
leads and guides us into great
adventures of faith.
